Type Locality and Naming

Anhui Geological Bureau 326 Geological Team named it in 1966. The named section is located at the tip of the plough near Yueshan, Huaining County, Anhui Province.

Lithology and Thickness

It is mainly composed of grayish to grayish-black sandstone, siltstone, sandy shale and grayish black carbonaceous or carbonaceous shale interbedded with unstable coal seam, and locally contains fine gravel, iron nodules or argillaceous nodules. It has horizontal bedding, microwave bedding and worm tube structure. The thickness is 18 to 75 m

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Purplish red and brown yellow breccia at the bottom and underlying Tongtoujian Fm

Upper contact

Pebbled sandstone or conglomerate at the bottom of Jurassic Moshan Fm at the top and overlying are all conformable contacts.

Regional extent

This formation only appears in Wuhu-Anqing area, with stable lithology.

Fossils

Wuhu to Anqing area contains plants Neocalamites carrerei, Equisetites cf. sarrani, Cladophlebis ichünensis, Cl. gracilis, Dictyophyllum exile, Thaumatopteris sp., Cycadocarpidium erdmanni


Age 

Tong et al. (2019, Triassic integrated stratigraphy and timescale in China, Science China: Earth Sciences, v. 62, no. 1) assign it as Carnian-Rhaetian.
